Cough's California Personality Inventory.

  • Achievement via Independence (Ai): "I do good work when I can set tasks for myself."
  • Achievement via Conformance (Ac): "I do well in meeting requirements others set for me."

Domino states that

  • instructors who pressed for conformity would get poorer results from high-Ai students
  • instructors who pressed for independent work would get better results from high-Ai students

Majasan (1972) stated that students who share the same beliefs as the professor would do better.

This results in, "The constructively motivated student (who seeks challenges and takes responsibility) is at his best when an instructor challenges him and then leaves him to pursue his own thoughts and projects. In contrast, the defensive student tends to profit when the instructor lays out the work in detail."

The article suggest that "higher order interactions":

  • make it unlikely that social scientists will be able to establish generalizations applicable beyond the laboratory
  • that generalizations established in the field work will be maintained

Social research should be less concerned with hypothesis testing and more concerned with interpreting findings in local contexts
